Is God Infinite?
When we are young, parents seem like they can do everything, like they know everything. As we grow older we lose this vision of our parents. We start to see their flaws as well. We see that they are human beings just like us, only with more life experience. However we have a Father who can do everything, who does know everything, and who has no limits.
In this post I will first define infinite second give the implications if the questions is false and finally show why the answer is yes.
First, what does infinite mean? Well, Got Questions says "infinite simply means without limits.” The question is then asking whether or not God has limits, but there are other terms of infinite as well. First off God is infinite in essence not magnitude. To be infinite in magnitude would be to be infinite in something fiscal of this world. Such as the number infinity. That is infinite in magnitude but not in essence.
Which leads me to the second point of clarification: God's infinite essence is absolute, not relative. To be relatively infinite means you are infinite in one area going back to the number of infinity, for example it is relatively infinite because it is infinite in numerical value but it is not infinite in other places. God is absolutely infinite which means He is infinite in all areas.
Now what are the implications if the answer is no. Well if God is not infinite that means He is finite. Meaning He would be no different then a mortal man. Which leads to many implications but the primary being He would not be God. He would not have created the world, He would not have resurrected, He could not have performed miracles. If God is not infinite then everything the Bible says about God is wrong.
Finally how do we know God is infinite? To answer this let’s go down three aspects of God that scripture shows to be true.
First God is unbound by matter. Genesis 1:1 Says “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” God created all matter so how could He be bound by His own creation. Furthermore God does not exist in the same realm as we do. Which leads me to my next proof.
God is outside of time. Revelation 1:8 states “I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to be, the all mighty.” God specifically says here He is “who is and who was and who is to be” showing He is outside of time. That He has no beginning. If He is outside of time He can not exist in the same realm as us because we exist within time. We are unable to change what has already happened nor see what will happen but God can.
Finally, God controls death. If God was finite He would have an end. He would die, but God has shown us He is not at the mercy of death but instead controls death. The obvious earthly example is Jesus resurrecting and Lazarus coming back to life. Going further then this Jesus directly states that He controls death and life. John 11:25 “Jesus said to her. I am the resurrection and the life the one who believes in Me will live even though they die.” This shows that God holds the power over life, on earth and in heaven. On earth we will die, but if we believe God does not leave us to eternal death but instead give us eternal life.
God holds the world in His hands. It is vital we trust in Him with everything we have. He has no limits His knowledge is everything (Hebrews 4:13), His power is everywhere. He is the only one who truly knows everything about us and still loves us. Because God is infinite we know we can depend on Him no matter the situation.
