Is God Triune?
The way I have often heard the trinity explained is through the analogy of roles, I am a son but also a brother and a student but one person. However, this analogy has a major flaw, It portrays the distinct persons of God as roles that God adapts to fill. The trinity does not speak about three different roles that God plays but the three distinct persons that He is.
I will first explain how there is evidence of God being multiple in scripture then I will explain how we know these multiple to be Jesus, the Father, and the Holy Spirit.
First we have scripture backing in the beginning of Genesis 1:26 it says “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image.”” The word it uses here is not “mine” but instead “our” image showing that God is multiple. Furthermore, Got Questions states “A common Old Testament Hebrew name for God is Elohim, a plural noun.”
Now that we know that God is multiple, let's look at who His distinct persons are.
First, we know that the Father is part of the trinity. The bible directly says the Father is God in Romans 1:7 “To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 1:7 specifically says God our Father.
Secondly, we know Jesus is part of the trinity. In John chapter 1:1, it says “The Word is with God and the Word was God” later in the chapter it says “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14).
Finally, we know the Holy Spirit is part of the trinity. In acts 5:3-4 “Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” Here it first states that Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, then says Ananias lied to God, showing how the Holy Spirit is God.
This question may seem simple and commonly known at first but you can dive very deep into sub categories of the trinity. Such as what is the nature of the trinity or what does the trinity truly look like. While this is commonly known it is important to know the scripture and reasons behind our beliefs. I was taught many christian beliefs growing up and as I have been challenged over them I realized that I did not know how to defend my beliefs because I never did my own research. For everything we believe we must know why we believe it.
